Maui green waste: where to take it, and why the yard you pick matters

The short answer

Green waste is free to drop off for Maui residents at every county green waste site. For Lahaina and West Maui the closest one is the Olowalu convenience center, 3 miles south of town, Monday to Saturday 8am to 2:30pm. Central Maui has two yards: Hawaii Organics Compost in Waikapū and Maui EKO at the Central Maui Landfill in Puʻunēnē. Businesses pay $51 a ton, and everything has to be cut under 8 feet long and 3 feet across, with no rocks, dirt or trash mixed in.

The Hawaii Hauling truck hauling a load on a Maui road
Our truck, loaded. Green waste rides the same road as everything else, it just gets off at a different yard.

We're Hawaii Hauling, a junk removal and roll-off bin company based in Lahaina. Yard debris is a regular part of what rides in our truck, and it never goes to the landfill face: we sort it off the load and drop it at the green waste yard. This is where we take it, checked on 22 September 2026.

Where's the closest green waste drop-off to Lahaina?

Olowalu. The county's Recycling and Refuse Convenience Center sits at Honoapiʻilani Highway and Olowalu Village Road, 3 miles south of Lahaina, and it takes green waste, metals and used motor oil (county recycling centers list). Hours are Monday to Saturday 8am to 2:30pm, closed Sunday (Maui County). It's free for residents, like every county site except the Central Maui Landfill's $5 trash fee (Landfill Information).

Here's the strange part. The county's own storm notices list Puʻunēnē and Waikapū as the places to take your branches, and the pages that rank for this search don't mention West Maui at all. So people in Lahaina load up and drive over the pali, past a free drop-off 3 miles from town. One regular on Reddit rents a U-Haul pickup in Lahaina and runs his yard waste to Olowalu, and says they allow two trips a day (r/maui).

What Olowalu doesn't publish: a volume limit, or whether whole trunks are fine. That two-trips-a-day line is one commenter, not the county. Call the recycling hotline, 808-270-7880, before you show up with a whole avocado tree.

West Maui is getting its own real collection center. The county was picked for a $3,607,065 federal grant to build the first one, taking green waste, recyclables and bulky items (Maui Now, 29 August 2026). No land picked yet, and the county's own estimate is about three years from buying it to opening day. Until then, Olowalu.

Is green waste free on Maui, and when does it stop being free?

Yes for residents, at every site on the island. The county's Recycle page says it twice: residential green waste at Maui EKO is free, and residents who self-haul from their own property drop for free at Hawaii Organics (Maui County). Olowalu and Hāna charge residents nothing either (Landfill Information). The only gate fee at any of them is the $5 the Central Maui Landfill charges when you dump actual trash.

Businesses pay. The commercial rate at EKO is $51 a ton (Maui County), which is a $40 tipping fee plus an $11 recycling surcharge (Maui Now, 18 September 2025). Waikapū matches it and adds a no-scale option for small loads: $15 for a small pickup, $25 for a flatbed, or the same $51 a ton.

The catch is who counts as a business. The gate decides by looking at you.

How you show upWhat the gate charges
Your own truck, your own yard wasteFree
A rented U-Haul, contract in the cabFree. They ask to see the contract.
A truck with a company name on the doorCommercial rate, $51 a ton
Paying with a business debit cardCommercial rate
Green waste from a rental property you ownCommercial account needed
A hauler or landscaper doing it for youCommercial account, theirs (Maui County)

The middle rows come from the r/maui dump-run thread, where one guy got flipped to commercial for the card he paid with and was sent to Safeway for cash (r/maui). None of it is on a county page, which is exactly why it catches people. Bring the rental contract and pay cash. Leave the work truck at home.

When we haul it, it goes through our commercial account, and the dump receipt rides along on your invoice so you can see what the yard charged.

Does the Maui landfill take green waste, and what happens to it after the gate?

It does, and it's free. Then it gets buried. Maui EKO Systems runs the green waste yard behind the Central Maui Landfill at 1 Pulehu Road in Puʻunēnē, Monday to Saturday 6am to 3pm, 6am to noon on holidays (Maui County). Since EKO lost its composting site in 2020, the green waste that goes in there is ground, mulched, mixed with sewage sludge and landfilled (Hawaii Public Radio, 9 September 2025).

Over in Waikapū, the same free load becomes dirt. Hawaii Organics Compost opened on 2 September 2025 at the corner of Kuihelani and Honoapiʻilani highways and runs hot composting: windrows held between 131 and 160 degrees (Hawaii News Now, 6 July 2026). By June 2026 it had kept over 12,000 tons out of the landfill (Maui Now, 16 June 2026). It sells the result back as Pure Green Compost, Active Mulch and a 50/50 blend (Maui Now, 6 May 2026), and in July it gave mulch away free to anyone who turned up with a bucket (Maui Now, 10 July 2026).

Why it matters more than the price: green waste and biosolids run about 53,000 tons a year on Maui, a quarter of everything going into a landfill with roughly four and a half years of life left in it (Maui Now, 18 September 2025). Pete Sullivan, who owns the Waikapū yard, put it the way a lot of us would: "a lot of us are ocean people, we're surfers," and what goes in the landfill ends up in the ocean (Hawaii News Now). Same price, and one of the two yards hands the load back as mulch. Pick that one.

The rest of the landfill, its fees and the stuff it turns away, is in our Maui landfill guide.

What are the rules? How small do branches have to be cut?

Under 8 feet long and 3 feet across, with no rocks, mud or trash in the load. That's the county's line for every green waste site (Maui County, 26 March 2026). Cover the load on the highway too, because a trail of leaves down the Honoapiʻilani is how the guy behind you learns your license plate.

The 3-foot rule is the one that gets people. A trunk is the one thing in the pile that doesn't get smaller when you glare at it. If a tree came down whole, cutting it into 8-foot lengths is half the job, and it's the half the tree guy usually leaves you with.

Leaves, grass clippings, garden and hedge cuttingsTreated or painted lumber
Palm fronds, brush and dead plantsMetal, plastics and rocks

That list is from the yard's opening announcement and its own FAQ (Maui Now, 11 October 2025, Hawaii Organics FAQ). EKO publishes no list at all, so a call to (808) 572-8844 before you load stumps or coconuts saves the drive. Olowalu's list is one line long: green waste, metals and used motor oil.

Palm fronds, coconuts and tree trimmings: the beetle and the ant

Two invasive pests on Maui travel in green waste, and both turned up this year, one in Central Maui and one in West Maui. Check the pile before you move it.

The coconut rhinoceros beetle bores into palm crowns and leaves V-shaped cuts in the fronds. Three dead adults turned up in traps at the Waikapū compost yard in June 2026, two months after one was found near Kahului Airport (Maui Now, 16 June 2026). The Waikapū windrows run at 131 to 160 degrees and the beetle dies at around 120, which is why the yard's owner says it can't live there (Hawaii News Now). The state's advice for anyone with palms, in order:

  1. Look at the crown for V-shaped cuts in the fronds.
  2. Dig through compost piles and any rotting coconut material for grubs up to 4 inches long.
  3. Keep green waste movement to a minimum, and take fronds and trunks to an approved yard, never the roadside.
  4. Found one? Report it at 643pest.org or (808) 643-7378.

The little fire ant is the West Maui one. A Kapalua infestation reported in June 2026 has nearly 40 acres confirmed and is projected to reach 125, and the island total stood at 519 acres across 30 infestations in July (Maui Now, 14 September 2026). They ride in potted plants, soil, mulch, green waste and landscaping material, which means the free mulch you bring home from a giveaway deserves a look too. The Maui Invasive Species Committee does free surveys at (808) 573-6472, and the same 643pest.org line takes the report.

Who picks up green waste on Maui when you can't haul it?

Nobody, on a normal week. Maui County's curbside service is one trash cart and nothing else, with no green waste can (Maui County). Your options are a storm-time county bin, an Upcountry nonprofit, or a hauler.

The county bin has been announced after each big storm this year, the kona storms in March and Tropical Storm Lala in August, so treat it as a storm thing and not a standing service. Mālama Kula's locations and who qualifies are on malamakula.org, not in the news piece, so check there first.

Everywhere else it's a tree guy and then a hauler, and the tree guy is the expensive half. In the r/maui thread after Lala, one homeowner was quoted $10,000 for a tree job and another paid $2,000 to have a huge avocado and a jacaranda cut down with the trunks chopped (r/maui, August 2026). A third wrote that both of his tree guys were swamped. That's the line to remember: the cutting gets booked out, and the pile sits in the yard for weeks.

The Hawaii Hauling truck on a Maui road
The second half of a tree job. The tree guy brings the saw; this brings the pile to the yard.

One more thing from those threads. A commenter's advice for any hauler you hire is to get the receipt from the dump, because a pile that leaves the driveway doesn't always reach the yard (r/maui). Ours goes on the invoice.

What we see on the truck

Yard debris is a regular part of what we haul, and after enough of it, three things.

  1. The tree guy leaves the pile. He's paid to cut, not to haul, and the trunks are the part nobody planned for. Cut into 8-foot lengths, one big tree is a truck on its own.
  2. The photo is smaller than the pile. Branches settle, and the far side is always deeper than it looks from the driveway. I'll tell you it's around this price, and when we get there it's usually more, which is why the number gets confirmed on site before anything is loaded.
  3. Green waste and junk don't ride together for free. A pile that's half branches and half old fence boards gets split at the yard: the branches drop free, the treated lumber pays the landfill fee. We sort it on the way so the whole thing doesn't get charged as trash.

Maui green waste questions

Straight answers. Something missing? Call us.

Is green waste free on Maui?

For residents, yes, at every green waste site: Olowalu, Hawaii Organics Compost in Waikapū, Maui EKO at the Central Maui Landfill and the Hāna landfill. Businesses pay $51 a ton at the two Central Maui yards, or $15 to $25 a load for a small pickup or flatbed at Waikapū.

What are the green waste hours on Maui?

Olowalu is Monday to Saturday 8am to 2:30pm. Hawaii Organics in Waikapū is Monday to Friday 6am to 4pm and Saturday 7am to 2pm. Maui EKO at the landfill is Monday to Saturday 6am to 3pm by the county's page, though Yelp lists 7am, so call (808) 572-8844 if you're an early bird.

Can I burn yard waste on Maui?

No. Backyard burning of green waste has been banned on every Hawaiian island since January 2012, with fines of up to $10,000 a day, and only permitted agricultural burns go through the Department of Health. Haul it or chip it.

How do I get rid of tree branches on Maui for free?

Cut them under 8 feet long and 3 feet across, keep rocks, dirt and trash out, and drop them at Olowalu, Waikapū or the landfill's green waste yard. All three are free for residents hauling from their own property. Bring the rental contract if you're in a U-Haul.

What do I do with palm fronds on Maui?

Hawaii Organics Compost in Waikapū accepts palm fronds, and its hot composting kills coconut rhinoceros beetle larvae. Before you move fronds or coconuts, check them for V-shaped cuts and grubs, and report anything you find at 643pest.org. EKO publishes no list, so call before hauling fronds there.

Can I use a U-Haul for a green waste dump run on Maui?

Yes. Bring the rental contract, because the gate asks to see it, and pay cash or with a personal card. A truck with a company name on it, or a business card at the window, gets charged the commercial rate.
