The short answer
Maui County has no bulky item pickup for furniture or mattresses. Both are banned from county trash pickup. The county does pick up appliances from its refuse customers for $25 each, and scheduling can take up to six weeks. Everything else goes to the Central Maui Landfill yourself, $5 a load, or on a hauler's truck the same day.

We're Hawaii Hauling, two brothers born and raised in Lahaina, hauling junk on Maui since 2024. A single couch, mattress or fridge usually runs $300 to $500 with us, and we can come the same day. The county's routes come first below, because some of them are free. Every rule here was checked on the county's own pages on 12 October 2026.
Find your big thing: who takes it on Maui
| The item | County pickup? | Where it goes, and the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Couch, chairs, dresser, table | No. Banned (Maui County) | The Central Maui Landfill in your own vehicle, $5 a load. Or a charity shop, if it's good enough to resell. |
| Mattress, box spring | No. Banned | The Central Maui Landfill, $5 a load (Ask the Mayor). The ReStore doesn't take them (Habitat Maui). |
| Fridge, freezer, stove, washer, dryer, water heater, window AC | By application only (county form) | County pickup for refuse customers, $25 per appliance. Or drop it free at Hammerhead Metals Recycling in Puʻunēnē (Maui County). |
| TV, computer, monitor, printer | No | E-Cycling Maui, 301 Hansen Road, Tuesdays 1 to 5pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm. Free for residents (Maui County). |
| Tires, car batteries | No | E.H. International in the Central Maui Baseyard, weekdays 8am to 4pm. Call (808) 868-4362 for fees (Maui County). |
Does Maui County have bulky item pickup?
No. Maui County doesn't run a bulky item pickup for furniture or mattresses. The county's collection rules ban "mattresses, box springs, furniture, water tanks, propane tanks, sinks, or other weighty or bulky items" from every residential pickup (Maui County). The truck that empties your cart isn't coming back for the couch.
| Island | Couches and mattresses | Appliances |
|---|---|---|
| Oʻahu | Picked up by appointment, one a month per address, up to five bulky items (City and County of Honolulu) | Up to two on a separate appliance appointment |
| Maui | No pickup. Banned from county collection. | $25 per appliance, by application, refuse customers only |
If you moved here from Oʻahu, that table is the whole misunderstanding. Over there you book a slot and the city takes the loveseat. Here you can set it by the mailbox and wait, and by Christmas it'll still be there with a gecko living in it.
People have been asking for a long time. In 2015 someone wrote to the mayor's office about "couches and other big stuff" and got this back: "Maui County does not have bulky item pickup for furniture" (Ask the Mayor, Maui Now). Eleven years on, the answer hasn't moved.
One more thing before you get ideas. A couch left on the roadside is illegal dumping, and the county asks people to report it to Maui Police at (808) 244-6400 (Maui County). So the curb is out. Here's what's in.
Maui County appliance pickup: $25 each, up to six weeks
The one big thing the county does pick up is an appliance. County refuse customers can book a home pickup for $25 per appliance, six appliances at most, and the county's form says scheduling "may take up to six weeks" (Maui County's appliance pickup form). You book it through the Solid Waste Division at (808) 270-7720 (Maui County).
| Step | What the county's form says |
|---|---|
| 1. Qualify | It's for county refuse customers, meaning a house with a county trash account. |
| 2. Check | Refrigerator, freezer, water cooler, water heater, dishwasher, stove or range, washer, dryer. Air conditioners are window units only. |
| 3. Pay | Fill in the form and pay by cash or check at the Solid Waste Division, 2200 Main Street, Suite 200, Wailuku. Monday to Friday, 8am to 2:30pm. |
| 4. Wait | The county phones you with a date and time. |
| 5. Set out | Only now. The form asks you to keep the appliance off the curb until the county has called. |
Two things I'd confirm by phone. The county's recycling page calls it a "$25.00 fee" for a home pickup and the form says $25 per appliance, so ask which one applies if you have more than one. And the form is dated 2023, though it's the one the county's site still links to.
Six weeks is fine if the dead fridge lives in the carport and nobody minds. It's less fine when the new fridge shows up Thursday, or when the old one died with a week of groceries inside. Then you can drop it at the metal recycler for free, or have us pick it up the same day.
No bulky trash pickup? The $5 landfill run
Furniture and mattresses go to the Central Maui Landfill in Puʻunēnē, in your own vehicle, for $5 a load. It's open Monday to Saturday from 6am to 3pm and closed on Sundays, and it takes cash or card with a 2.35% card fee (Maui County). Neither furniture nor mattresses are on the landfill's banned list (Maui County).
The mayor's office has said it out loud twice. In 2015 the answer for a couch was to take it to the Central Maui Landfill, and in 2019 it was "Our landfills do accept old mattresses" (Ask the Mayor, Maui Now). No county page spells it out today, so if you're hauling something odd, call the scale house first at (808) 270-6153.
What the landfill won't take is the other half of your pile. Appliances, air conditioners, tires, car batteries and propane tanks are all banned at the gate (Maui County). So a couch and a fridge in the same truck bed means two stops. The Maui landfill guide has the fees, the lanes and the holiday hours for the first one.
The real cost isn't the $5. It's a truck, a second person for the other end of the couch, and a morning. Everybody has a friend with a truck, and that friend has started screening your calls.
If you've got all three, go. It's the cheapest way there is.
Free drop-offs for appliances, TVs and tires
Appliances, TVs and tires each have a drop-off near the landfill, and most of them are free for residents. None of them take furniture or mattresses. Here's who takes what, from the county's recycling page (Maui County).
| Place | Takes | Open, and the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Hammerhead Metals Recycling, Central Maui Baseyard, 2000 Maui Veterans Highway | Fridges, freezers, air conditioners, washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters | Free. Monday to Friday 7am to 3pm, closed 11 to 11:45am. First Saturday of the month 8am to noon. (808) 280-8844 |
| E-Cycling Maui, 301 Hansen Road, entrance on Pulehu Road | TVs, computers, monitors and printers only | Free for residents. Tuesdays 1 to 5pm and Saturdays 9am to 1pm. |
| E.H. International, Central Maui Baseyard | Car tires and lead-acid batteries | Call (808) 868-4362 for fees. Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm. |
| Go Green events in Lahaina | Appliances, microwaves, tires, scrap metal, TVs and computers | Free, by appointment. Saturday mornings when one is posted. |
The Go Green events are the closest thing West Maui has to a bulky day. The county posted two for June 2026, 8am to noon by the Pioneer Mill smokestack in Lahaina, free, with an appointment required and no commercial loads (Maui County). For the next date, call Mālama Maui Nui at (808) 877-2524. Couches and mattresses aren't on the list, so the loveseat stays home again.
Cans, bottles and cardboard have their own map. Our Maui recycling centers post has every drop-off on the island.
Free large item pickup: donating furniture that's still good
If the furniture is in good shape, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Wailuku may take it, and may even come get it. Donations are by appointment only, and you can ask for a pickup with the form on its site or at (808) 242-1140 (Habitat for Humanity Maui). Its page still says home pickups are limited, so call before you count on one.
| The ReStore takes | The ReStore turns away |
|---|---|
| Furniture, cabinets and vanities, doors and windows, tools, light fixtures, lawn and garden equipment | Mattresses, box springs, sleeper sofas, particle board furniture, headboards and footboards, large appliances, air conditioners, exercise equipment, electronics |
Read the right-hand column twice. The mattress, the sleeper sofa and the particle board bookcase are the exact things most people are trying to get rid of. A charity shop has to sell what it takes, so "it's still good" has to mean good enough that a stranger would pay for it.
The mayor's office gave the same advice in 2019. Try Goodwill or Habitat with furniture "in very good condition", and expect a yes "only if it meets their standard for resale" (Ask the Mayor, Maui Now).
Same-day bulky item pickup: when to call a hauler
For furniture no charity will take, a junk hauler is the only pickup on Maui that comes to your door, and it can be the same day. Our junk removal works like this: you text a photo, we give you a price, and we carry it out from wherever it sits.
It costs a lot more than the landfill's $5, and I won't pretend it doesn't. What you're buying is the truck, the two people, the stairs, the sorting and the drive to Puʻunēnē. If you have a truck and a free Saturday, take it yourself.
It makes sense when time or stairs are the problem. A sleeper sofa on the third floor with no elevator. A tenant who left a living room behind, with the next one landing Friday. A new fridge arriving Thursday while the county's list runs to six weeks.
| The route | Cost | How fast |
|---|---|---|
| County appliance pickup. Appliances on the county's form only, and you get it to the curb. | $25 per appliance | Up to six weeks |
| Haul it yourself. Furniture and mattresses to the landfill, appliances to the recycler, and you lift at both ends. | $5 a load, plus your truck and your morning | Any day but Sunday |
| Call us. Furniture, mattresses and appliances in one pickup, and we do the lifting. | Usually $300 to $500 for a single item | Same day when you need it |
Furniture and mattresses have their own pages if that's all you've got: furniture removal and mattress removal. Either way, the price is confirmed before we load anything.
What we see on single-item calls
A few things from our side of the truck.
- Nobody asks about price first. The first question on almost every call is how soon we can be there. By the time someone calls about a couch, they've been walking around it for a while.
- The price is set before we lift. I quote from your photo, then confirm it on site before anything gets loaded. If the job turns out bigger than the picture, you hear the new number first.
- One pickup, sorted on the way. The fridge goes to the metal recycler in Puʻunēnē and the couch goes to the landfill. You don't make either stop.
- One item is enough to call. When our first website went live, three calls came in the first two days, and all three turned into junk removal jobs.
